Jackie Brown, Elmore Leonard

Last night I watched Jackie Brown (on Netflix), a Tarantino movie.

Nice movie.

Robert De Niro plays a strange supporting role, a daft accomplice of arms dealer Samuel L. Jackson. I thought: the big De Niro playing such a non-descript character, that’s fantastic.

More thoughts.

I saw the movie was based on a book of Elmore Leonard, I writer I had never heard of, but I recently watch an interesting video about him. The role Samuel L. Jackson plays reminds me of his role in Kingsman: The Secret Service. A ruthless criminal shot in the climax of the movie. And then on comparing these stories: Jackie Brown is a way more interesting story than the flat action-movie story of Kingsman.

Blue Velvet

Last night again watched David Lynch’ wonderful movie Blue Velvet.

I couldn’t remember that the image of a crazy Dennis Hopper with an oxygen mask comes from this movie.

The Addams Family

After at least twenty years I re-watched The Addams Family (it’s on Netflix now). It is still a remarkable and original movie, with its goth culture and nonchalant black humor. Morticia Addams played by Angelica Huston; probably her Magnum Opus.

I guess the movie has become a classic.

Howl’s Moving Castle – by Hayao Miyazaki

Wonderful anime by the master of the genre Hayao Miyazaki, founder of studio Ghibli.

Earlier I watched Castle in the Sky and the Spirit Away, enjoying these very much. The movies have a strange threatening atmosphere without becoming horror. Yet the movies combine a darkness with a playful touch.

Miyazaki’s movies are now viewable on Netflix.

Maleficent 2 – Mistress of Evil

Maleficent 2 is somewhat rougher than the first Maleficent episode.

Bad queen Michelle Pfeiffer ruins the wedding of prince and princess in order to gain power over the Moors and destroy the fairies inhabiting that land.
